Abstract

Health Information Management (HIM) is critically important in medicine today as it is responsible for properly collecting, storing, and using patient data to support better clinical decisions, drive the public health sector, and enable the reimbursement of financial costs. The foundation for HIM is these standardized coding systems, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), where doctors write complicated narratives, and these systems convert them into structured, actionable data. This comprehensive review is dedicated to the development of HIM, the role of coding systems in health delivery, their strong impact on the quality of care, efficiency, and interoperability, and how technologies like AI, blockchain, and FHIR can be game changers. This article borrows from up-to-date literature to highlight the challenges, opportunities, and the road that can be taken to leverage coding systems that bring about new healthcare outcomes in a data-driven world.
